Packaging Market Update

Monday, June 17, 2019

The second quarter of 2019 has experienced  fluctuations in packaging pricing, both up and down. Therefore,  it is important to align yourself with a packaging supplier who can remain stable in both pricing and inventory levels. Below is a summary of the net changes during the second quarter of 2019.

Packaging Product

Net Change

Polypropylene Strapping

-3%

Polyester Strapping

-2%

Stretch Film

+4%

The decrease in polyester strapping is the first DECREASE since 2017. In 2017 and 2018, we saw approximately a 12-14% increase in the polyester strapping market. This decrease is a welcome change.

The most surprising of the changes  was in the stretch film market. Even though all indicators pointed to no change in pricing, an across the board increase from the resin manufacturers forced stretch film manufacturers to increase 4% in May. Stretch film had been steady in the first four months of 2019.

Looking ahead to the third quarter, some areas that might affect  packaging include:

  • Tariffs on Mexico

  • Push to reduce and recycle packaging
